Nieuw Amsterdam Floats

With all the hype over new ships being introduced before year’s end, news about Holland America Line’s dignified and elegant Signature-class ship currently under construction has been somewhat overshadowed. However, Nieuw Amsterdam has reached a significant milestone at the Fincantieri shipyard in Marghera, Italy.

Happily, we’re pleased to report that last Friday at 3 pm Venice, Italy time, water began flowing into the ship’s building dry dock. She floats! Nieuw Amsterdam was expected to be towed out of the dock to the outfitting quay yesterday.

Nieuw Amsterdam’s inaugural cruise sails July 4, 2010 on a 10-day roundtrip cruise from Venice to ports in Croatia, Greece, Montenegro, and Italy. After several Mediterranean sailings, Nieuw Amsterdam embarks on a fall crossing of the Atlantic as she heads to warmth of the Caribbean for the remaining winter months.
