I've only been on a cruise once on the Fourth of July and that was aboard Holland America's Eurodam inaugural voyage following her christening in Rotterdam. As you can imagine, there were many Dutch passengers on board and they were somewhat confused by the red, white, and blue bunting decorating the lido deck and the poolside barbeque featuring hot dogs, potato salad, and apple pie. A Dutch gentleman heard me speaking English and approached to ask what the fuss was all about. When I told him we were celebrating America's independence and that the food was traditional picnic fare, his face lit up. He congratulated me and said he was grateful for America's participation in liberating Holland during World War II. Then he bought me a beer so we could toast our freedom. It was a special moment.
Another special moment today will surely be the evening's celebratory fireworks on Disney Cruise Line ships—the only ships that are authorized to have such a display at sea.
It's difficult to capture a good shot of fireworks, but I hope you enjoy our attempt.
