Earlier this year the Bermuda Sun revealed that Royal Caribbean was “keen” on adding Bermuda to the 2015 summer season of its newest mega-ship. But there is a hitch—Quantum of the Seas may just be too big. That being the case, it would mean shipping channels would need to be dredged if Bermuda is to be on the ship’s itinerary.
The size problem was revealed during simulation tests conducted last month in the United States. It was determined that the existing North and South Channels are not big enough to safely accommodate the vessel, particularly in high winds. Norwegian Breakaway, the biggest ship to presently call on Bermuda, transits the North Channel to reach the West End.
A Bermuda Government spokesman said, “Technical officers from the Ministry of Public Works in consultation with the Department of Marine & Ports will analyze the simulation report and trial run data, and then provide recommendations that will be considered by Cabinet.”
While Bermuda is not on her previously announced schedule of itineraries, if Quantum of the Seas is to visit the island in less than two years a decision will need be be forthcoming and dredging will have to commence soon in order to be finished in time.
