A couple months ago as Mel and I were preparing to leave for Fort Lauderdale and two back-to-back Caribbean cruises, I noticed that my passport was set to expire in six months. That six month threshold actually passed while we were on the second ship and, just to be safe, I dug out my certified birth certificate as a back-up proof of citizenship. Why was I concerned? After all, my US passport was valid. While it wasn't a problem for our Caribbean sailings, in some instances it would have stopped me from traveling to certain foreign countries.
