Holland America Updates Smoking Policy

Only about twenty percent of American adults are currently smokers so it's not a big deal that smoking areas on cruise ships have shrunk. We applaud the cruise lines for their health and safety concerns, but also give them high marks for not ostracizing the minority of smokers who want to be comfortable with their habit. It's a win-win situation in most cases.

Holland America Line—the last of the major America-based cruise lines to allow smoking on private balconies—is revising their smoking policy to conform with the policies of most other cruise lines. "To better align with guest wishes and health concerns," Holland America Line's smoking ban on balconies begins with cruises that depart in January 2017 and thereafter.
