Back on board, the main showlounge took on a West Coast flavor with Chris Montez, who has appeared with the Beach Boys, performing the most popular hit of his idol Richie Valens—La Bamba—as well as Let’s Go Little Darlin’, Call Me, and other standards from There Will Never Be Another You and The More I See You to You Look wonderful Tonight.
Looking wonderful was the next artist all the way from Great Britain, Petula Clark. Everyone remembered and sang along with her hits—I Couldn’t Live Without Your Love, I know A Place, Don’t Sleep in the Subway, and Downtown. In addition, Ms. Clark has had a diverse career including the West End stage in London where she performed as Norma Desmond in “Sunset Boulevard” and Hollywood where she appeared on the silver screen as Finian’s daughter in “Finian’s Rainbow” with Fred Astaire playing the title role and she sang some of the numbers from those performances. Sitting at the piano, she accompanied herself on a soulful rendition of John Lennon’s Imagine and played tribute to Elvis with Love Me Tender.
After the show we headed for the Lido Deck where Holland America’s chefs had been busy preparing quite a spread for our Back to the Beach BBQ. We feasted on shrimp, Mahi Mahi, burgers, hot dogs, ribs, and all the trimmings before heading to the Ocean Bar for a tribute to Buddy Holly, followed by a Luau Under The Stars presented by the Elvis Tribute Artists.
Such a full and fun day in port and at sea on The Malt Shop Memories Cruise… and we plan to keep it going again tomorrow.
