MSC Cruises Announces Ricky Martin, Andrea Bocelli and More for U.S. Naming Ceremony Celebration

MSC Cruises has announced the line-up for the official launch and Naming Ceremony of MSC Seaside, which will be held on December 21st in PortMiami. As part of the traditional Naming Ceremony that is held for every new ship, MSC will welcome special guests and entertainment, Miami authorities, global media, and key partners from across the travel industry. For this very special Miami launch, MSC Cruises is proud to reveal an international list of celebrated invitees that reflects the Company's European heritage and global presence.

Headlining entertainment for the event will be international superstar, Ricky Martin, who will perform some of his most popular hits. Renowned for bringing Latin music to the forefront of popular music, Ricky Martin is a worldwide star who has recorded in many languages, and truly encompasses the international spirit of MSC Cruises and the city of Miami.

Also taking to the stage will be world-famous tenor, Andrea Bocelli, whose dazzling classical career has taken him all over the world—including performances for four U.S. presidents, three Popes, the British Royal Family, and several Prime Ministers, to name just a few.

Making a guest appearance at the event will be Miami football legend and Hall of Fame quarterback, Dan Marino, who played for the Miami Dolphins for 17 years. MSC Cruises signed a partnership with the Miami Dolphins in October of this year, becoming the official cruise line for the team and further strengthening its relationship with the South Florida community. Fans and guests will have the chance to experience the Miami Dolphins at sea and meet team alumni on a themed cruise aboard MSC Seaside in 2018.

In charge of it all will be actor and popular American TV host, Mario Lopez, who will serve as the Master of Ceremonies for the evening. Lopez will welcome guests to the star-lit festivities on MSC's "Blue Carpet," where celebrities will give interviews, take photographs, and meet the crowds. Lopez will then take to the stage to host the evening's entertainment.

An MSC Cruises' Naming Ceremony would not be complete without the ship's Godmother, Sophia Loren, who has played the leading role in this time-honored tradition since 2003. As one of the most celebrated Italian actresses of our time, the glamorous Sophia Loren will christen the ship with a ribbon-cutting and officially name the spectacular vessel, MSC Seaside.

But the main star of the show will be none other than MSC Seaside. Quite unlike anything else at sea, MSC Seaside will shine among Miami's skyline—commanding attention with its revolutionary design. Inspired by the architecture and lifestyle of Miami, the ship will be right at home in warm South Florida waters. The state-of-the-art ship will offer world-class entertainment, a range of international dining concepts, a gorgeous spa, outstanding facilities for families, a private yacht club (MSC Yacht Club), and expansive outdoor spaces. The striking MSC Seaside is just one more reason for guests all over the world to join MSC Cruises on an unforgettable trip that follows the sun.

Holland America Line Celebrates a Milestone for Newbuild Nieuw Statendam

In anticipation of the upcoming float-out of ms Nieuw Statendam, Holland America Line held the ship’s coin ceremony last week at Fincantieri’s Marghera shipyard in Italy. Following Italian shipbuilding tradition, Anne Marie Bartels, a member of Holland America Line’s esteemed President’s Club, served as the ship’s Madrina and participated in the festivities.

During the coin ceremony, observed to bring good fortune, a Dutch guilder was welded to the forward mast of the ship by Bartels; Antonio Quintano, director of the Fincantieri Marghera Shipyard; and Keith Taylor, executive vice president, fleet operations for Holland America Group, followed by speeches and a blessing by the shipyard chaplain. Cyril Tatar, Holland America Group’s vice president of newbuilding services, also was in attendance. The Dutch Guilder brings sentiment and history to the newbuild—it is from 1898, the year Holland America Line’s first Statendam came into service.

“The coin ceremony is one of the most time-honored traditions in the building of a ship, and having Anne Marie, one of our most valued guests, serve as Madrina makes the celebration all the more special,” said Orlando Ashford, president of Holland America Line. “Nieuw Statendam reflects the next generation in our brand evolution while maintaining the classic hallmarks we are known for. By placing an authentic Dutch guilder in the hull from the year our first ship named Statendam came into service is a meaningful way to build that bridge from our past to our future.”

Bartels first sailed with Holland America Line on the s.s. Nieuw Amsterdam from Rotterdam, the Netherlands, to New York, New York, when she was 21 years old. She has since been on 79 Holland America Line cruises, including 12 Grand Voyages. Bartels has more than 2,500 cruising days with the line, which gives her elite President’s Club status for guests with more than 2,500 days on board.

During the festivities a drydock gate was opened briefly and water touched Nieuw Statendam’s hull for the first time as is tradition during the coin ceremony. On December 21, 2017, the ship will be fully floated out and move to an outfitting pier.

Nieuw Statendam is the second Pinnacle Class ship for Holland America Line, joining ms Koningsdam, which launched in April 2016 from the same shipyard in Marghera. A third Pinnacle Class ship will set sail for the cruise line in 2021.

The 99,500-ton ship will reflect the ongoing evolution of Holland America Line. While much of the ship’s design will be similar to Koningsdam, Nieuw Statendam will have exclusive public spaces and its own style created by leading hospitality designer Adam D. Tihany and designer and architect Bjorn Storbraaten. The ship will carry 2,660 guests and feature all of the hallmarks of Pinnacle-class design: grand light-filled spaces; visual drama; and sumptuous interiors inspired by the fluid curves of musical instruments.

Holland America Line’s first ship to be called Statendam sailed in 1898, and this will be the sixth ship in the company’s history to carry the name. In combining the Dutch word for “new” with the classic “Statendam,” Holland America Line is celebrating the company’s past, present and future.

Silversea Cruises' reimagined Silver Cloud has arrived in Antarctica on her first luxury expedition voyage to the White Continent.

Silversea’s first crossover luxury expedition ship arrived successfully in Antarctica last week, marking her maiden visit to the remote continent following a $40 million refurbishment and conversion into an ice-class polar expedition ship.

Currently sailing a 10-night Antarctic Peninsula expedition roundtrip from Ushuaia, guests are being treated to vistas of towering icebergs, snow-capped mountains, and awe-inspiring wildlife aboard the completely refitted ship that includes the only Relais & Châteaux restaurant at sea.

“We are extremely excited to announce Silver Cloud’s debut in Antarctica,” said Manfredi Lefebvre, Silversea’s Chairman. “As the first ship in our classic luxury fleet when she debuted in 1994, it only makes sense that she should continue her career as our first vessel to truly bridge the gap between luxury and expedition cruising.”

Silversea’s first crossover luxury expedition vessel can accommodate 254 guests, further limited to just 200 when cruising in polar waters. Most of her all-suite accommodations feature generous private verandas along with luxury touches that include a choice of European bath amenities, butler service for all guests, and sumptuous Pratesi bedding and a nine-option pillow menu.

Throughout, the reimagined Silver Cloud is positioned as the premier luxury expedition vessel. The brand-new Tor’s Observation Lounge offers commanding, 180-degree views of Antarctica along with relevant titles on the history of this beautiful but frozen land, while five dining options onboard offer up the finest cuisine in polar waters. The ship also includes the all-new Zàgara Spa and a dedicated Photo Academy, where state-of-the-art equipment and professional photo-editing software can be used in conjunction with classes offered by the ship’s resident photo expert.

Onboard and ashore, between 20 and 22 Expedition Team members conduct immersive destination experiences, aided by an onboard fleet of 16 Zodiacs and 10 kayaks. These passionate and insightful professionals offer informative lectures, discussions and recaps in the ship’s two-story Explorer Lounge, in addition to guiding zodiac explorations of the coastline and leading hikes and nature walks on-shore – all of which are complimentary.

Silver Cloud will offer 10-day roundtrip luxury expedition voyages to Antarctica through February, when she will embark on a journey from the southernmost tip of South America to the southernmost point of South Africa. From there, she will wind her way up the overlooked western coast of Africa to the natural beauty of Northern Europe and Arctic Svalbard. Her summers will be spent in the High Arctic, cruising in and out of the ice-filled bays and fjords of Iceland, Greenland, and Arctic Canada in search of polar bears, whales and walruses.

After an exciting mini-season spent in Central and South America, Silver Cloud returns to Antarctica again next fall for another series of expedition voyages to the White Continent.

Departing from Miami year-round, Empress cruise vacations will include 7-night Best of Cuba itineraries to Cienfuegos, Havana and Nassau, Bahamas; 5-night sailings visiting Key West, Florida and spending the night in Havana; and an immersive 8-night journey to Cienfuegos, Santiago de Cuba, Grand Cayman, and Labadee, Haiti. Lauderdale from November 2018 to March 2019. All sailings to Cuba will offer shore excursions designed for guests to experience the destination and to comply with the people-to-people educational exchange activities requirement as set forth in the U.S. regulations.

"Cuba is such an important part of Caribbean culture, and we can't wait to call on Santiago de Cuba and Cienfuegos next year, showcasing even more of the country's scenic beauty, rich history and distinctive architecture," said Michael Bayley, President and CEO, Royal Caribbean International. "Cruising remains the easiest way to visit Cuba, and with both Empress and Majesty sailing there in 2018 and 2019, we hope to make it that much easier for adventure seekers to experience the legendary island."

Cienfuegos is a UNESCO World Heritage Site established in 1819 with a wide array of visually-stunning attractions, including acclaimed Botanical Gardens with more than 2,000 plant species on display, impressive neoclassical architecture, a 950-seat opera house and the bustling Santa Isabel Boulevard.

Explore the Rarely Seen Wonders of Alaska in 2018 with Windstar’s New Signature Expeditions

Windstar Cruises is serving up intimate adventures and active enrichment with a luxurious twist announcing the launch of a new Signature Expeditions program. Windstar’s Signature Expeditions will offer extremely high touch experiences both onboard ship and in the marine and wildlife environments where the award-winning boutique line sails. The new Signature Expeditions program kicks off in May of 2018 with Windstar’s greatly anticipated return to the Great Land of Alaska.

“We are offering travelers the chance to slow down and truly enjoy scenic immersion cruising amongst the glaciers and wildlife, and we have the perfect size ships for Alaska, period. With the addition of our brand-new Signature Expeditions, our comprehensive land tours, and exciting roster of shore excursions, each guest will get to experience the best of adventure, breathtaking nature, and completely personalized service in an incredibly immersive yet completely uncrowded cruise,” stated Windstar Cruises President John Delaney. “Our experienced team has created the most intensive Alaska experience available in small ship cruising today and we can’t wait to proudly welcome guests to Windstar’s Alaska. It’s all about our unique style of casual yet luxurious adventure.”

Windstar’s Signature Expeditions program is designed to provide guests with dual opportunities for immersive and instructive enrichment onboard and Alaska offers the perfect waterways and rugged grounds to do so. First, all guests can partake in complimentary enrichment classes, one-to-one discussions and topical presentations with industry-leading outdoor experts; there will be an expedition team of five on every Alaskan cruise. Second, guests can pair their learnings with optional off-the-ship, personalized small group excursions on the ship’s fleet of kayaks and zodiacs or on intimate small group hikes. All Signature Expeditions will be launched and led by those same expert biologists, glaciologists and more. This two-fold concept lets Windstar guests put their new knowledge of the region into immediate action with up-close explorations of Alaska’s magical realms like the Misty Fjords where few (mass-market) cruisers ever visit, let alone kayak the verdant and rugged natural coastline.

The big difference in Windstar’s Signature Expeditions will be the one characteristic that is unique to the luxury line itself—the experience all happens with just over 200 fellow guests aboard each sailing on a luxuriously intimate and truly small cruise ship. The 212-passenger Star Legend, arrives in Alaska after spending winter and early spring in Asia and will have recently completed an extensive dry-dock installation of the expedition hard-ware that will support the expedition team and new program.

Hand-picked Signature Expedition Team to Lead Classes & Excursions
Windstar has engaged a team of expedition specialists to assist with the creation of Windstar’s new Signature Expeditions in Alaska, as well as operate the program on board. These geologists, glaciologists, marine biologists, and other experts will give commentary, interact with guests, and be available to answer guest questions throughout the cruise. Combining insight with exploration, the skilled and knowledgeable team of expedition specialists will also lead outings aboard a new fleet of six inflatable boats (vessels called Zodiacs) and expedition kayaks, as well as take guests on hikes. Whale watching will be a star attraction, as “whale season” in Alaska coincides with Windstar’s time sailing in the region.

For the Alaskan debut of Windstar’s new Signature Expeditions, which the company plans to expand to other cruising regions in the future, travelers can choose from morning and afternoon watercraft tours that will leave directly from the ship’s tender and/or Watersports Platform, which means less time traveling and more time making the most out of the vacation. These special places are nearly impossible to reach without access directly from the ship. Zodiac excursions will bring guests close to the shoreline for wildlife viewing, and kayaks will allow exploration of fascinating intertidal zones on the Alaskan coastlines, getting up close and personal with magnificent glaciers and, perhaps, sea lions and whales. Expeditions will be led in Kenai Fjord, Misty Fjords, Tracy Arm/Endicott Arm, and the Inian Islands, dependent upon weather. Like shore excursions, the Windstar Signature Expeditions tours are optional for guests and available at a per guest price of for $40 for hikes, $170 for kayak tours, and $150 for zodiac tours, all led by the onboard Expedition Team experts.

Scenic Immersion Cruising to Highlight Windstar’s Signature Expeditions
Windstar Signature Expeditions get guests closer, show them more, and bring them home with once-in-a-lifetime memories. Windstar’s cruises in Alaska feature six expert guides with a deep understanding of geology, marine biology, botany, and more who travel on board for the entire cruise. These experts provide insight, education and commentary so guests can truly immerse themselves and absorb the Great Land. Here are a few examples of these new expeditions:
  • Misty Fjords Kayaking: On a two-and-a-half-hour kayak expedition through Misty Fjords National Monument, guests will see 3,000-foot glacier-sculpted cliffs with numerous waterfalls cascading down the cliffs, wildlife like bald eagles, and perhaps brown and/or black bears and mountain goats. Throughout the forest, participants will find western hemlock, Sitka spruce and western red cedar.
  • Kenai Zodiac Tour: On a Zodiac tour around Kenai Fjords National Park area, guests will ride by tidewater glaciers that flow from the Harding Ice Field, possibly seeing a glacier calving while riding among ice that has calved. Taking in the spectacular scenery of the area, participants may see harbor seals, black bears on the beach, bald eagles, and puffins.
  • Wrangell Interpretive Walk: This intimate tour will be led by two of the experienced Expedition Staff members on board. John Muir hiked here while using Wrangell as headquarters for his Stikine delta explorations. Participants are assured of wonderful views and a true immersive forest experience with an elevation gain of about 400 feet. The hike will present good views of the surrounding mountains and the town and waterways below.
Land Tours to Denali Round-out the Complete Alaska Package
Windstar’s just-announced pre-and post-cruise Alaska land tours are available to be added to many of Windstar’s Alaska sailings in 2018. The five-day (four night) journey from Seward to Fairbanks, and the reverse, will captivate guests with the unspoiled beauty of the Alaskan wilderness.

If beginning in Seward, a Windstar guide will greet travelers after they disembark and then journey to Alaska’s largest city, Anchorage. Time will be spent exploring the Anchorage Museum before continuing onward for an overnight in the hidden gem of Talkeetna, a unique Alaskan aviation, mining, and climbing town.

On day two, the voyage continues via rail with a guided tour into Denali National Park and includes a fun musical dining experience and an orientation about the park, prepping all on the big adventure that awaits them the next day.

Day three will delve into the magnificence of Denali with a roughly seven-hour tour, encompassing the park’s history and catching glimpses of a few local friends like caribou, moose, and grizzly bears. On day four, guests will board a motor coach to Fairbanks, Alaska’s Golden Heart. Here, highlights include a cruise down the Chena River, taking in the history of this pioneering community and a farewell dinner that captures the frontier spirit.

Adventures Never End with Exceptional Shoe Excursions, Tailored for Skilled Travelers
Guests can create the ultimate Alaskan adventure, Windstar has crafted a new collection of unparalleled shore excursions highlighting the very best that Alaska has to offer. Travelers are able to choose from the following highlights, amongst a plethora of other exclusive outings.
  • Kroschel Wildlife Sanctuary: This wildlife sanctuary near Haines sprawls over 60 acres and will provide incredible photo opportunities of orphaned Alaskan animals living in their natural habitat. The venue is overseen by caregiver Steve Kroschel, a real life Alaskan Dr. Doolittle. Kroschel was born and raised on a farm in Northern Minnesota and has worked with wild animals since childhood in a variety of ways, including producing his own wildlife documentaries and working on films for Disney and National Geographic.
  • Taku Lodge Feast & 5 Glacier Seaplane: For those looking for an authentic, one-of-a-kind Alaskan experience, the seaplane-only-access to Alaska’s famous Taku Glacier combines true wilderness with glacier-view dining. From Juneau, a classic DeHavilland seaplane will ascend over five breathtaking glaciers surrounded by the majestic Tongass National Forest and land on the Taku River at the elegantly rustic and historic Taku Lodge where travelers will savor a menu of fresh and homemade local fare. All participants get to enjoy a window seat and headset for continuous narration.
  • Fishing the Inside Passage: This scenic outing in Wrangell offers a chance to catch a variety of fish from halibut to salmon in the abundant waters of the Pacific along the famed Inside Passage of Alaska. A quick boat ride ensures that the most time is actually spent fishing rather than just getting there. With “captain’s choice”-style fishing there is also a higher likelihood of catching a specific species for that given day. To top it all off, any catch can be professionally processed and shipped home for an additional fee.
Windstar announced its plans to return to Alaska after being away from the region for more than two decades. The inaugural 2018 sailing in the region begins in May aboard the 212-passenger, all-suite Star Legend, with the sailing season continuing through September 10. The itineraries include less-visited ports like Metlakatla and Wrangell, as well as feature longer 14-day cruises to slow down and truly enjoy scenic cruising amongst the glaciers, including Tracy Arm and Misty Fjord.

Emerald Waterways Offers Smart Phone Photography Workshops On Board August Rhone River Sailing

European river cruises offer endless opportunities to capture gorgeous photographs, from the grandiose cathedrals and castles to the bucolic countryside. But for many, even in the era of the ubiquitous smartphone, returning home with impressive vacation photos is often easier said than done. Emerald Waterways is offering guests aboard the August 4, 2018 Sensations of Southern France sailing the chance to improve their skills and learn to use their smart phones to take sharper, more captivating photos with one of the industry’s best, Jack Hollingsworth.

During this special sailing, Hollingsworth will lead guests in multiple on-board workshops showing even novice smartphone users his tricks of the trade. Guests will learn everything from how to compose a better shot, which apps the pros use (and how to use them) and how make the most of the powerful cameras that live inside our smart phones. To reinforce these lessons, Hollingsworth will offer hands-on assistance during afternoon and evening sailings and on shore excursions to further insure guests will go home with photos that will be the envy of their friends and families.

Jack Hollingsworth is a recognized name in travel and lifestyle photography, especially when it comes to shooting with a smart phone, and the author of the book, “The Joy of iPhotography.” He shot commercially for year using traditional cameras until he fell in love with his iPhone camera, which he now uses as his primary capture tool. Over the past six years, he has shot over 500,000 images in over 20 countries using only his iPhone and his work has appeared in Apple’s popular #ShotoniPhone campaign. Hollingsworth also teaches seminars and classes on smart phone photography across the country, which have inspired thousands to further explore the power of their camera phones.

Emerald Waterways Sensations of Southern France cruises take place on board the newly launched Emerald Liberte and travel through the popular Provence and Burgundy region on eight-night itineraries from either Lyon or Arles between April and October. The itinerary includes Chalon-Sur-Saône, Beaune, Macon, Tournon, Arles and historic Avignon.

Scenic Luxury Cruises has grown over its 30-year history to include award-winning, all-inclusive escorted tours that take participants to many of the world’s most fascinating destinations; two award-winning river cruise lines—Scenic and Emerald Waterways; and, in 2018, the World’s First Discovery Yacht—Scenic Eclipse. Emerald Waterways' seven Star-Ships offer deluxe cruises in Europe and an exclusive charter on the MV Navigator for sailings in South East Asia, while Scenic’s 15 Space-Ships offer the only truly all-inclusive, five-star river cruises in the same destinations.
