Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) Releases The Cruise Travel Report: Attitudes, Behaviors & Travel Preferences of Cruisers & Non-Cruisers

Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) has released the Cruise Travel Report a revealing look at the attitudes, behaviors and travel preferences of cruisers and non-cruisers. The report delves into a variety of topics ranging from travel planning and the use of travel agents to vacation companions and destination preferences. A key highlight of the study defines a new “Cruise Generation,” outlining the growing number of Millennials and Generation Y travelers embracing and enjoying cruise travel.

“The cruise industry is growing at an incredible pace and on a global scale. For that reason, it is critical to continue to conduct research to gain the best understanding of the attitudes and behaviors around travel as a whole and particularly around cruise travel,” said Cindy D’Aoust, president and CEO, CLIA. “While there is a wealth of findings in the 2017 Cruise Travel Report, one that stands out is that cruise industry has been successful in engaging younger generations.”

Today, cruise travel has become the most popular travel preference among younger generations, including Millennials, creating a new “Cruise Generation.” This generation rates cruise travel as the best type of vacation compared to land-based vacations, all-inclusive resorts, tours, vacation house rentals, and camping and 90 percent that have experienced cruise travel say they will continue to cruise. The results of the Cruise Travel Report also indicates that cruising is experiencing a rejuvenation as Millennials and Generation X are becoming enthusiast cruisers and the “Cruise Generation is adopting the cruising lifestyle.

Additional findings of travel behaviors of cruisers and non-cruisers from Cruise Travel Report: Attitudes, Behaviors and Travel Preferences of Cruisers and Non-Cruisers report include:
1. A New World – Four out of ten (42 percent) of both cruisers and non-cruisers alike seem to agree that they go on vacation to see or do new things, while many other travelers (33 percent) look to relax and disconnect from their daily stressors. Nearly all (88 percent) of cruisers say cruises are better for total relaxation over land-based vacations.
2. Diversity at Sea – Contrary to common perceptions, according to the study sample, people who take cruises are younger than those who take land-based vacations. The Cruise Generation is also more diverse than the Non-Cruisers. Three-quarters of Cruisers are White/Caucasian compared to 84 percent of people who take land-based vacations. African Americans represent 11 percent of Cruisers, versus six percent of Non-Cruisers
3. Proper Planning –The vast majority of cruisers plan a trip between four and 18 months prior to departure, as opposed to half of non-cruisers who book land-based vacations less than three months before. Cruisers also dive deep into planning relying on numerous sources of information, including travel agents, multiple websites, word of mouth, travel guides and magazines, social media and various travel apps.
4. Kid-Friendly Cruising – Families looking to travel together often look to the water for a vacation with 46 percent bringing children along, compared to 29 percent of land-based travelers. The typical cruise travel group has an average of more than two children and almost half (42 percent) of cruise parties have children under the age of 18.
5. Destined for Destinations – In terms of vacation choices, the vast majority of cruisers (68 percent) and non-cruisers (56 percent) alike identify the vacation destination as the most important factor. This is followed closely by cost and value, with more non-cruisers (37 percent) citing it as the second most important factor versus cruisers (24 percent).
6. A Party of Planners – When it comes to planning vacations, most report the planning is typically left to themselves and their spouses/partners. When children, other family members, and/or travel agents participate in the vacation planning process, the likeliness to take a cruise over a land-based getaway increases. When parents include children over the age of 18 in travel decisions, travelers report it has a positive impact on overall cruise enjoyment.
7. Agent Allegiance – Travel agents play a vital role in cruise vacation planning with 82 percent of cruisers stating they tend to work with a travel agent when booking a cruise compared to 40 percent of non-cruisers.
8. Cruise Loyalty – Across all generations an overwhelming number of those who cruise are loyal to cruise travel. More than six out of ten (63 percent) of Generation Y/Millennial cruisers will definitely take another cruise, almost seven out of ten (69 percent) of Generation X cruisers will take a repeat cruise, and half of Boomers will go on to take another cruise trip.
9. A Matter of Time – It may only be a matter of time before non-cruisers try out a cruise. When asked about the best type of vacation a substantial number (13 percent) of non-cruisers named an ocean cruise as their vacation of choice.

Viking Ocean Cruises Takes Delivery Of Third Ship

Viking Ocean Cruises has taken delivery of Viking Sky, the company's third ship. The delivery ceremony took place today when the ship was presented at Fincantieri's shipyard in Ancona, Italy. On Feb 25, Viking Sky will set sail from Rome's port at Civitavecchia and will make her way through the Mediterranean on her maiden voyage. After sailing spring itineraries throughout the Western and Eastern Mediterranean, Viking Sky will make her way to officially be christened under Norway's "midnight sun" on June 22 in Tromsø—a nod to Viking's Norwegian heritage. Following the christening, Viking Sky will continue her maiden season sailing itineraries in Scandinavia and the Baltic before crossing the Atlantic in September on her way to the Americas and the Caribbean.

"In the past two years, we have been encouraged by the overwhelmingly positive response our first two ocean ships have generated among our guests and travel industry partners. Today we mark an important milestone in welcoming the third ship to our fleet. By the end of 2017—our 20th year in business—we will also welcome our fourth ship, doubling our fleet in less than a year," said Torstein Hagen, Chairman of Viking Cruises. "With our fast-growing fleet and innovative design, we look forward to introducing even more experienced travelers to The Viking Way of destination-focused itineraries in the years to come."

Considered a "small ship," the all-veranda Viking Sky is a sister ship to Viking Star and Viking Sea, which launched in 2015 and 2016, respectively, to customer and industry acclaim. Viking's ocean ships have a gross tonnage of 47,800 tons, boast 465 staterooms and accommodate 930 guests. In November 2017, Viking will also welcome Viking Sun, which will spend her maiden season sailing the company's first-ever World Cruise, which spans 141 days, five continents, 35 countries and 66 ports. Viking Spirit will join the fleet in 2018 and will sail itineraries in Australia, Asia, and Alaska. A sixth, yet-to-be-named ship will be delivered in 2019.

The Viking Difference
Designed for discerning travelers, Viking offers guests an alternative to mainstream cruises. The Viking Difference is providing guests with well-designed cruises that bring them closer to the cultures of the world. Ships are small to get guests closer to their destination, with more time in port, more overnights and fewer days at sea. Onboard, guests find serene Scandinavian spaces, where every room is functional, quiet, and filled with light. All-veranda ships mean that guests experience every day with a new, expansive vista. With the most al fresco dining at sea, featuring regional cuisines and always-available American classics, Viking's guests can truly dine in their destination. A focus on cultural enrichment brings immersive experiences onshore and onboard. And only The Viking Way brings guests itineraries that feature Local Life, Working World and Privileged Access experiences.

In addition, Viking Inclusive Value provides a small ship experience at a big ship value—with every cruise fare including a veranda stateroom, shore excursions in each port of call, all onboard meals, and all port charges and government taxes. Guests also enjoy many complimentary amenities as part of their fare, including: beer and wine with lunch and dinner service; premium dining reservations; Wi-Fi; self-service laundry; access to the Thermal Suite in the LivNordic Spa; and 24-hour room service—an included value of more than $200 per person, per day for an average cruise. Rick Springfield To Host The 80s Cruise 2018 in Caribbean

Television and pop music icon Rick Springfield will take over the 2018 sailing of The 80s Cruise as its official host. From the moment the ship leaves Fort Lauderdale on March 17, 2018 until it returns eight days later, Springfield will lead parties, headline concerts, join special events and even pop up at other concerts every single day throughout the voyage. By the end of the cruise, his signature hit, “I’ve Done Everything For You,” will take on a whole new meaning.

“When the producers of The 80s Cruise asked me to be the first artist to ever host the cruise, I wanted to do it right, which means doing it big,” says Springfield. “I will be everywhere on the ship!” Springfield will perform three concerts onboard, host four parties, hold an autograph session, play in both the Celebrity Poker Tournament and the popular 80s themed live game show and participate in a Q&A session in front of a live audience. Throughout the week, he’ll also drop by other concerts to introduce the band to fans.

Rick Springfield rose to stardom in the 1980s, debuting as heartthrob Dr. Noah Drake on General Hospital in 1981 while hitting #1 on the pop charts at the same time—and winning a GRAMMY Award—with “Jessie’s Girl.” His songs dominated the airwaves in the years that followed, with “I’ve Done Everything For You,” “Don’t Talk To Strangers,” “Affair of the Heart,” “I Get Excited,” “Human Touch” and more. Springfield continues to balance both acting and music, most recently starring with Meryl Streep in “Ricki and the Flash” (2015) and as Lucifer on the television show “Supernatural.” He is also best known for a recurring role on “True Detective” and “Californication” while headlining tours around the world.

The 80s Cruise will rock with awesome activities and excellent events all day. Big hair and big shoulders rule the 80s Prom and the Back To The 80s Night parties along with a Neon Beach Party and ‘80s Movie Costume Party. Leg warmers and sweatbands aren’t just fashion accessories during aerobics classes and ping pong tournaments. A live 80s Game Show, throwback Karaoke and “You Be the VJ” contest turn the spotlight on the guests. Interviews with 80s superstars held in front of live audiences, awesome 80s videos and movies that play non-stop in every cabin and a genuine video game arcade supply never-ending entertainment options. Rick Springfield will be joined by the biggest artists of the era, including Loverboy, Mike & the Mechanics, The Tubes, and Tommy Tutone with more performers to be announced in the coming weeks.

The cruise takes place aboard Celebrity Summit, part of the highest rated fleet of premium ships delivering extraordinary service, exceptional dining featuring menus crafted by a James Beard award-winning chef, elegant rooms, and the Canyon Ranch SpaClub, the most luxurious spa club at sea. Cabin rates for The 80s Cruise includes all concerts, activities and events onboard the cruise, gourmet and casual fare meals, 24-hour room service, port charges, taxes, and onboard gratuities. Cunard's Queen Victoria Becomes Largest Passenger Ship to Sail the Amazon

Yesterday morning, Cunard's luxury cruise ship, Queen Victoria, made her maiden voyage through the 'Meeting of Waters,' and became the largest passenger ship to sail the Amazon, sailing between the dark Rio Negro and the pale Amazon River in Manaus, Brazil. Manaus marks the sixth out of 32 ports on Queen Victoria's 41,000 nautical mile, 120-night World Voyage.

"Queen Victoria's maiden call in Manaus represents the type of innovation and uniqueness that guests have come to expect from Cunard," said Josh Leibowitz, senior vice president, Cunard North America. "Since it pioneered World Cruising in 1922, Cunard has continued to offer guests itineraries that visit exciting destinations and that offer unique 'firsts' that can only be experienced on Cunard."

Lindblad Expeditions Announces the National Geographic Venture

Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic has named its newest addition to their fleet, National Geographic Venture, which is currently being built in Seattle and will make her inaugural voyage in June 2018. Sister ship to the National Geographic Quest, which is launching in June 2017, they are the first new builds in Lindblad’s history and the only purpose-built expedition ships designed and built from scratch in the USA.

The 100-guest National Geographic Venture will launch in June 2018 and will feature 50 cabins, 22 with step-out balconies, and six sets of connecting cabins for families and groups; all category 5 cabins can accommodate a third guest. The ship will be outfitted with a fleet of 24 sea kayaks, paddle boards, snorkeling equipment, and Zodiacs, all of which are geared to get guests out and into the wild, remote places being explored; state-of-the-art expedition technology, including a remotely operated vehicle (ROV), video microscope, a hydrophone and underwater cameras.

Her inaugural voyage will be on the June 24, 2018 departure of “Treasures of the Inside Passage: Alaska & British Columbia.” This 14-day expedition will give the ship a day in the San Juan Islands and a day in the Gulf Islands before heading north through BC and Alaska. She will then do the 8-day “Exploring Alaska's Coastal Wilderness” for 8 departures; another “Treasures of the Inside Passage” in September, followed by six 8-day “San Juan Islands & British Columbia” departures.

The design of the two new builds incorporates all that Lindblad has learned in 30+ years of operating between Alaska and Central America into every aspect of their construction. This includes larger cabins, many with balconies or the ability to connect, and beautiful public spaces. But it goes way beyond that. Here are a few improved aspects of the ships and enhanced expedition experience:
• A Better View – A common constraint with wildlife viewing on a ship’s bow is that the anchoring gear takes up space and a single level allows only one row of guests to enjoy clean sightlines. To provide a superior viewing experience, the bow on the National Geographic Quest and National Geographic Venture have been designed with the anchoring gear separated from guest space by a tiered viewing system. This enables multiple rows of guests to line the bow with an unobstructed view. Also, two stairways on either side of the bow lead to an expansive observation deck one level up, for a unique perspective. All of these exterior viewing levels are accessible from the lounge, making for a seamless viewing experience.
• Mark V Zodiacs – Inflatable expedition landing craft enable our naturalists to take guests to places otherwise inaccessible. To outfit the National Geographic Quest and National Geographic Venture, we have worked hand in hand with the team at Zodiac Milpro to deliver the first and only Mark V Zodiacs built entirely in the USA. These boats are superior, military grade construction, but customized with features like extra holds for passenger stability and topside treads to improve footing for stepping on and off. Both ships will be outfitted with 8 Mark V Zodiacs and guests will embark and disembark via custom-designed ladders to improve safety and ease of movement.
• A Clearer View – Both ships feature a dining room with floor-to-ceiling wraparound windows and a lounge with wraparound windows as well. (Not to mention the many cabins with portholes, large view windows or sliding glass doors.) That’s a lot of glass. But what kind? We have painstakingly researched and tested many types of glass, ultimately selecting a premium glass with a straight tint. This will offer the clearest, most natural view possible.
• A Better Bridge –The bridges on these vessels have been uniquely designed with the guest in mind, and feature designated forward standing areas with clear views and settees set around the room’s state of the art equipment to ensure a comfort for longer stays. All Lindblad Expeditions’ vessels have an open invitation to the bridge, so that guests can learn about navigation and enjoy the vantage point that a ship’s bridge provides.
• Environmentally Friendlier – The internal systems aboard the National Geographic Quest and National Geographic Venture are the best available in the market today. Advanced waste management and treatment systems exceed international standards. To lessen the need for fuel, both ships feature a streamlined hull design, added a bulbous bow and have scoured the market for the most suitable propulsion systems available. Everything from the propellers to the engines have been specifically chosen to minimize vibration and improve fuel efficiency. Working in concert, these systems will enable the vessels to use less fuel than many ships far smaller.
• The Mudroom Keeps Cabins Cleaner – Taking our cue from the globetrotting National Geographic Explorer and Orion, the new builds will be the only ships in their regions of exploration to feature a mudroom for the storage of guest expedition gear. The room and rows of lockers will enable guests to store boots, snorkeling equipment and other gear, making excursion preparation more efficient and leaving cabins cleaner and more comfortable.
• A Shared Legacy of Innovation - When we wanted to build the perfect ships to explore from Alaska to Central America, we turned to Nichols Brothers Boat Builders on Whidbey Island, Washington, the same company that built the very vessels we’ve used for the last 36 years. Nichols Brothers Boat Builders completed the National Geographic Sea Bird in 1981 (then known as the Majestic Alaska Explorer) and the National Geographic Sea Lion in 1982 (then known as the Great Rivers Explorer). Lindblad’s work with Nichols Brothers will result in the only expedition ships of their kind built entirely in the United States—an endeavor of which both companies could not be more proud.

Windstar Announces Alaska Return in 2018

Award-winning boutique cruise line Windstar Cruises has announced plans to sail to Alaska in spring/summer 2018, bringing the Windstar way of small ship cruising to one of the world’s most popular cruise destinations. Windstar’s Alaska beckons guests to slow down over leisurely journeys. With voyages starting at 11 days, there is ample time for scenic cruising in both Canada’s and Alaska’s famed inside passages—where guests can look for orcas, bears, and bald eagles from the comfort of their elegant ship. Guests can enjoy a cup of cocoa on deck as they sail through Misty Fjords National Monument and Kenai Fjords National Park, experiences usually booked via a shore excursion because the “big ships” just don’t go there.

Each Windstar Alaska itinerary includes sailing through Tracy Arm Fjord—so close that noise of the ice breaking and falling into the water during glacier calving will surprise you. Enthusiastic park rangers, scientists, glaciologists, geologists, and other experts will be aboard each cruise to provide education, perspective, one-on-one discussions, and ample opportunities for individual discovery in America’s “last frontier.”

“We are so excited to be enhancing the Alaskan travel marketplace by introducing our brand of true small ship cruising to Alaska. Sailing closer to pristine deciduous shorelines, delving deeper into all-enveloping fjords, kayaking in icy straits right off the ship’s Watersports Platform, and viewing an endless wilderness from sea level. We are bringing our guests right to the heart of what makes Alaska and the Great Pacific Northwest such an amazing destination and magical place to visit,” remarked Windstar President John Delaney. “We are working hard now to arrange customized bucket list moments like the chance to hike atop the massive Mendenhall Glacier in Alaska’s capitol of Juneau, zip-line over crystal-clear creeks in bear country, snap a classic whale tail picture on your mobile phone—during a romantic deck-side dinner, fly over majestic Glacier Bay in a private plane, uncover Sitka’s rich Russian heritage, or check out Petroglyph Beach in Wrangell—a destination rarely visited by cruise ships. Windstar is thrilled to put its stamp on this classic cruise region and expects it will quickly become a Yacht Club Member favorite. We honestly can’t wait!”

Highlights of Windstar’s inaugural Alaska season with the 212-guest Star Legend yacht include:
• Every cruise features Tracy Arm and Misty Fjords.
• Optional up-close and personal kayaking and scenic cruising by Zodiac directly from the ship.
• Full destination immersion with 7 to 8 Southeast Alaska and British Columbia ports each cruise.
• Due to the small size of the ship, Star Legend will sail right into Misty Fjords and Kenai Fjords.
• Multiple glacier experiences on northbound/southbound sailings featuring Mendenhall Glacier, Tracy Arm, and Kenai Fjords.
• Longer itineraries of 11- to 14-days let the yacht move slower and get closer to shore exploring more off the usual charted course.
• Naturalist/Expedition Leaders on all voyages who will customize the experience for guests along with speakers from Native American tribes.
The news comes on the heels of Windstar’s recent announcement of its return to Asia in 2017/18, with the 212-guest, all-suite Star Legend yacht sailing from Tokyo to Seward (Anchorage), Alaska over a 14-day trans-Pacific cruise, which also stops in Miyako, Hakodate, and Kushiro in Japan.

Once in Alaska, the elegant Star Legend embarks on three new itineraries with eight sailing dates, departing May to August, including a 14-day Seward (Anchorage) to Vancouver option; 12-day Vancouver round-trip itinerary, and 11- or 12-day Vancouver to Seward (Anchorage) voyages. Windstar also plans to offer pre- and post-cruise land excursions, allowing guests more time to explore Alaska’s interior.

New Alaska Itineraries Sail Longer, Slower, Closer to Shore, and Deeper into Fjords
• Wonders of Alaska & Canada: These 14-day voyages from Seward (Anchorage) to Vancouver are offered three times, allowing guests a full two weeks of jaw-dropping scenery and history. British Columbia’s Prince Rupert, located on Kaien Island just north of the mouth of the Skeena River, is a highlight—a picturesque port rich in culture and heritage. Teeming with wildlife, guests can expect whale, eagle, salmon, and grizzly bear sightings, and also visit the Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary, with one of the densest remaining North American bear populations.
• Alaskan Splendors: Multiple journeys between Vancouver and Seward (Anchorage) over 11- or 12-days offers a tour de force of top Alaskan destinations. From the wildlife and glaciers of the Inside Passage to the First Nations totems of Ketchikan; hiking in Haines or sampling its cultural offerings like the Alaska Indian Arts Center, where traditional craftsmen offer demonstrations of their work; to the biggest zip-line in the United States in Icy Strait Point … it’s all of southeast Alaska’s most intriguing ports.
• Islands & Inlets of the Inside Passage: Offering two 12-day sailings, this itinerary cruises roundtrip from Vancouver, passing under the famed Lions Gate Bridge twice, both en route to the rugged coastline and on the return. A hidden gem at the midway point of the Inside Passage sits Metlakatla, Alaska on verdant Annette Island. This locale is the only U.S. settlement of the indigenous Tsimshian people, where guests get to visit a traditional longhouse and experience the full regalia of Native American song and dance shows.
Star Legend, one of the world’s most luxurious small cruise ships, plays the casually elegant host to no more than 212 guests. The experience is like sailing on your own private yacht with nearly a 1:1 staff to guest ratio, boasting all-suite accommodations and beautifully appointed public spaces such as the elegant AmphorA and romantic Candles restaurants. The classy and comfortable Yacht Club lounge located on the top guest deck is sure to be the place for spotting whale spouts and wildlife on the shoreline, as cruisers relax with a Captain’s Coffee and enjoy the 270-degree indoor/outdoor viewing opportunities.

Star Legend’s 106 suites offer more room than many hotels, with stylish décor, walk-in closets, marble bathrooms, L’Occitane® toiletries, and a tranquil seating area—all with a view. Alaska-bound travelers may choose from 106 suites, including 36 Balcony Suites with floor-to-ceiling sliding doors that bring fresh air and sweeping scenery indoors; or select one of 64 Ocean View Suites with large picture windows; or splurge on a decadent Owner’s or Classic Suite located just below the yacht’s Open Bridge, with a stunning view from the private veranda. Yacht guests will enjoy “destination authenticity” like only Windstar can deliver with regionally themed cuisine, libations, entertainment, speakers and activities, as well as personalized small group shore excursions, and always gracious and attentive service. MSC Cruises Breaks Ground on Private Island–Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve

MSC Cruises broke ground on Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve yesterday. Located south of Bimini in The Bahamas, the island is set to become a natural paradise exclusive to MSC Cruises guests as of November 2018. The Right Honorable Perry Gladstone Christie, Prime Minister of The Bahamas joined Pierfrancesco Vago, MSC Cruises’ Executive Chairman, at the official Groundbreaking Ceremony along with other Bahamian ministers and government officials. This milestone marks the official commencement of the works that will turn this former industrial sand extraction site back into its original pristine state.

The development of the Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve is part of MSC Cruises’ unprecedented $10.2 billion investment plan, which includes the building of up to 11 next-generation smart ships coming into service between 2017 and 2026. The first phase of development of the marine reserve will now begin as the island is cleared of existing industrial infrastructure so it can be turned again into a pristine marine reserve.

“Working in partnership with the Government of The Bahamas, our aim is to turn an industrial wasteland into a thriving environment for man and nature alike, bringing the island and its surrounding waters back to their original stat,” said Pierfrancesco Vago, executive chairman of MSC Cruises. “In so doing, we will substantially grow our Group’s already strong investment in the Bahamian economy, offering long-term employment opportunities to the local population. Bearing testament to our ability to innovate, unlike other Caribbean cruise resorts, a purpose-built berth and pier will allow our cruise ships to dock directly at Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve. Thus the island will de facto become an extension of the ship.”

“Located merely 65 miles east of Miami, Florida, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve has 11,400 feet of beautiful coastline and crystal blue waters teaming with unique marine life. The island has some of the finest aragonite sands in the world and once the work is completed, its surrounding waters will be home again to beautiful corals and rich aquatic life,” added Gianluca Suprani, head of global port development and shore side activities at MSC Cruises. “It will become a truly exclusive destination for MSC Cruises guests to experience the best the Caribbean has to offer.”

A comprehensive landscaping plan will see more than 80 indigenous Caribbean trees, grasses, flowers and shrubs, planted on the island, returning to their lush natural habitat. MSC Seaside and other MSC Cruises ships operating in the Caribbean will call Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve regularly on their itineraries from November 2018 onwards. For more detailed information about itineraries that call at this destination, see MSCCruisesUSA.com.

Viking Ocean Cruises has announced 13 new itineraries that will roll out in 2017, 2018, and 2019. By 2019, fast-growing Viking will be the largest small ship ocean cruise line, with six 930-passenger ocean ships and will offer guests new opportunities for exploration in Alaska, Australia, Asia and the Caribbean.

Ships Designed for Destination Cruising
Viking's ocean ships have a gross tonnage of 47,800 tons, boast 465 cabins and accommodate 930 passengers. In 2017, the company will welcome Viking Sky and Viking Sun to join Viking Star and Viking Sea in its fleet. Viking's fifth ship, Viking Spirit, will be delivered in 2018, and its sixth, yet-to-be-named ship will be delivered in 2019.

Light-filled with modern Scandinavian décor, Viking's ships were designed by experienced nautical architects and engineers, including the same interior design team responsible for the award-winning fleet of Viking Longships®. Throughout each ship, details are incorporated to pay homage to Nordic heritage and to help guests immerse themselves in local surroundings. A glass-backed infinity pool cantilevered off the stern offers unobstructed views; indoor-outdoor spaces offer more options for al fresco dining than any other vessels in their class; huge windows and skylights blur the lines between inside and out; and a wrap-around promenade deck nods to a bygone era of classic ocean liners.

Onboard Viking's ships, clean lines, woven textiles and light wood evoke the Viking spirit of discovery and connection to the natural world. A carefully curated collection of Scandinavian artwork adorns the walls of restaurants and public spaces. In the two-deck Explorers' Lounge at the bow of the ships, the décor was inspired by ancient Viking trade routes and navigation methods—imagery of star constellations and astronomical maps are complemented by antique globes, astrolabes and sofas with cozy pelts. In the LivNordic Spa, the holistic wellness philosophy of Scandinavia is in mind—from the Nordic ritual of the hydrotherapy pool and a real snow room, to materials inspired by Scandinavian nature: Swedish limestone and black slate; juniper and teak wood details; recycled and etched opaque glass; and cast iron. In the Wintergarden, guests can indulge in afternoon tea service under a canopy of Scandinavian trellised wood—an homage to Norse mythology and Yggdrasil, the Tree of Life. And in the Viking Living Room, a geometric garden was inspired by the wild lichen of Norway's Finse Mountain Plateau.

The Viking Difference
Designed for discerning travelers, the Viking Difference is providing guests with extraordinarily well-designed cruises that bring them closer to the cultures of the world. Itineraries are designed for maximum time in port, often with late evenings or overnights, so guests can experience local culture at night or evening performances. Ports include both cosmopolitan cities and "collector ports," appealing to those with an interest in history, art, music, and cuisine. And only The Viking Way brings guests itineraries that feature Local Life, Working World and Privileged Access experiences.

While onboard, guests enjoy informative talks from local experts and carefully selected lecturers in The Theater. Dining options onboard Viking's ships elevate food as a cultural experience—the World Café features global cuisine with live cooking and open kitchens; Mamsen's features Norwegian deli-style fare, according to the recipes of Hagen's mother, Ragnhild, otherwise known as "Mamsen;" The Chef's Table celebrate cuisines from around the world with multi-course tasting menus and wine pairings; and Manfredi's Italian Restaurant embraces authentic Tuscan and Roman cuisine. With the Kitchen Table experience, guests have an immersive opportunity to shop, cook and eat with the Executive Chef.

Viking Inclusive Value
Viking Inclusive Value provides a small ship experience at a big ship value onboard Viking Ocean Cruises—with every cruise fare including a veranda stateroom, shore excursions in each port of call, all onboard meals, and all port charges and government taxes.
