Hurricane Irene Reaches The Bahamas

Most cruise line private islands are located in the "family islands" of the Bahamas chain and Hurricane Irene has not only caused cruise ships to steer clear, the cruise lines have also prepared their properties in advance of the storm and evacuated their on-site employees.

More cruise ship itinerary adjustments:

Royal Caribbean's Majesty of the Seas bypassed their private island CocoCay today and headed for Key West, Florida, where it was expected to arrive this afternoon and stay overnight. After departing Key West the cruise will end on Friday when the ship reaches Miami, Florida.

Royal Caribbean's Monarch of the Seas skipped CocoCay yesterday, is in Key West, Florida, today, and will spend a day at sea tomorrow before the cruise concludes on Friday in Port Canaveral, Florida.

Norwegian Cruise Line's Norwegian Jewel cancelled a stop in Nassau today and is heading north to its New York homeport for its scheduled arrival on Saturday.

Norwegian Cruise Line's Norwegian Sky spent today day at sea instead of calling at Norwegian's private island Great Stirrup Cay. Depending on the storm, a port call at Freeport, Grand Bahama, may have to be cancelled for tomorrow. The current cruise ends in Miami on Friday.

Hurricane Irene appears to be heading toward the Outer Banks of North Carolina, where evacuation orders for tourists and residents have been issued.
