Post-Hurricane Maria Statement from Kenneth E. Mapp, Governor, U.S. Virgin Islands

The past two weeks have been a challenging period for the people of the U.S. Virgin Islands. Residents of the St. Croix district were impacted by Hurricane Maria in the wee hours of yesterday morning, and the good folks of St. John, St. Thomas, and Water Island, still recovering from Hurricane Irma’s passage, experienced a second onslaught with Maria’s wind and rain. As difficult as things are, Virgin Islanders are resilient, and we will come through this together even stronger. Your Government is doing everything in its power to restore our infrastructure and our communities.

I will resume my daily media briefings today, Thursday, September 21, to provide you with recovery information for the Territory. Effective immediately, a 24-hour curfew must be in place on all four islands until further notice. Your presence on the roads during the curfew hours will only hamper clean-up efforts, and could delay the distribution of critically needed supplies.
